Illustrated Directory of Scottish Provincial Silversmiths
This invaluable Directory is a handy A5, 160 page volume, continuing on from my first book. It lists more than 2000 sets of Provincial punch-marks used by smiths, from 1700 to the 20th
Century, in the various smaller Scottish towns, with over 800 illustrated.
The main 95 page section contains the various town listings in alphabetical order, with the relevant illustrations displayed on the facing pages. This is followed by is the 44 page overall
alphabetical listing, ideal for rapid identification. There are an initial 18 pages of introductory and explanatory information.
The only Edinburgh marks listed are those identified as being from Provincial hammermen who actually obeyed the law by sending their pieces there for legal assay. The Glasgow marks covered are
pre-1819.
Fitting neatly into a pocket, this book is ideal for collectors and dealers to seek out sleepers in auctions and to ratify or verify items for sale; and for auctioneers to ensure that these
collectable items do not get missed, thus escaping the above-mentioned sleepers.
The towns covered are Aberdeen, Arbroath, Ayr, Ballater, Banff, Canongate, Cupar, Dumfries, Dundee, Elgin, Fochabers, Forres, Glasgow (pre 1819), Greenock, Inverness, Iona, Kilmarnock, Kincardine
O'Neill, Leith, Montrose, Oban, Paisley, Perth, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Tain and Wick.
